The Waukegan Arts Council invites you to be part of one of the most exciting and diverse arts communities along the shore of Lake Michigan. Building on its rich cultural history, Waukegan has been home to scores of writers, actors, artists and musicians who have gone on to fame and fortune, including Ray Bradbury and Jack Benny.

Come and experience a wide variety of quality literary, performing and visual arts programming among Waukegan’s many long-standing and emerging arts and cultural venues. Throughout the year, residents and visitors can enjoy performances, festivals, film screenings, concerts, art exhibitions, classes, workshops and more.

2024 Grant Recipients

The Waukegan Arts Council is pleased to announce the recipients of its 2024 grant program.  

This year’s recipients are:

Ballet Folklorico Tayahua to support Fiesta Sin Frontera in downtown Waukegan on September 21 highlighting Mexican music and dance in celebration of Mexican Independence.

Three Brothers Theatre to underwrite the cost of a children’s production of Robin Hood.

The Waukegan Park District to underwrite the cost of stipends to pay musicians for performing in a new concert series titled Waukegan Symphony Orchestra – Carnegie Sessions.

BL Kenimer to support the Art Experience, a hands-on interactive art project which will be offered during ArtWauk in downtown Waukegan over the course of the coming year.

James Trevino to support a 30 Minute Artist Festival at Artpie on North Avenue in Waukegan which will include two 30 minute sessions of art performance plus one 30 minute session for audience participation.

In addition, two micro grants of $500 each were awarded to two local artists to allow them to pay for items needed to engage in their art. 

Tom Pedersen received a grant to purchase supplies which he plans to use to refurbish the train mural on Sheridan Road in Waukegan.

Shannon Smith received a grant to pay for the cost of tuition to attend classes at the Japanese Cultural Center to study Ink Wash Painting which she plans to teach at Jack Benny Center.
